Good Ol' College Try

April 16, 2016

Some days, while I'm taking a break from grading papers or lesson planning, I'll get on Pinterest in search of delicious looking food. I love saving yummy looking recipes, but the absolute best is when following a few links leads me to a new (to me) food blog that I can stalk. When this happens, I tend to get just a touch too obsessed for a few weeks, to the point where I read about two years worth of posts  and could literally take a quiz on this person I've never met and pass it with a B.

Finding a beautiful blog gives me so much motivation to jump in to this crazy internet food universe, but it also reminds me of the hard work it will take to be successful here. Like, I need to come up with my own recipes. Yes, I've been mixing whatever the hell is in my fridge with pasta and covering it with cheese for the past 4 years, but is that really a recipe?! I'm thinking the answer is no.

These beautiful blogs are also a constant reminder that my photography is inferior and I don't know what I'm doing. Which is BAD if you're trying to food blog because in this biz photography is everything. So, I'm working on it. But it's hard, ya'll! Actually, it's not just hard, it's seriously difficult. Not only do I have to create my own recipe, but I have to cook it during the daylight when it's best to photograph (which also happens to be when I'm at work during the week), I have to style my food which is totally foreign to me, and IT ALSO HAS TO TASTE GOOD?! Good isn't even enough, it has to taste amazing if you want to have a chance at succeeding. That requires making the same thing over and over again and tweaking it to perfection, and for me that means eating the same shit everyday for a week because there's no way on God's green that I'm buying food that I'm not going to eat.

Even though I know it's not going to be easy, I am really inspired to do this. When I sit down and really think about what I am interested in and what my passion might be, food and food policy always are at the top of the list. In my opinion, consuming and producing food is the best way to make a difference in this world.

How to change the world through food, step one: convince my students to stop eating hot fries for breakfast. Step two: create delicious recipes and share them on the internet. I know, these things seems impossible, but I'm going to give it a good ol' college try.

Oh yea, and this pasta with sardines recipe was terrible but the pictures turned out okay. I'm gonna work on it and get back to you. In the mean time look out for a couple posts on how to make scrambled eggs, avocado toast or something else stupid easy like that.
